If a student wears a Hamas or Hezbollah shirt to school, would that be considered anti-semitic? Should they be suspended for doing so? In 1977 the ACLU defended the rights of Nazis to march in Illinois. I'm pro Israel etc. I'm just wondering where the bright line is between free speech is.
That's the thing. There were some "radical" ideas in the past, like ending slavery, allowing women to vote, civil rights which could be construed as "hate speech" against the group who stood to lose out by such changes. It's a good thing we have the 1st amendment that protects hate speech. However, schools do have more leeway as long as the restrictions are not viewpoint-specfic. They can restrict t-shirts about the middle east conflict, but not only those that are pro-Israel or pro-Palestine.
So we're talking about being tolerant of a person's right to be hateful? At what point do we draw the line?
