The above is a mess of misinformation. The first half starter at the D1 divisionals meet had a slightly longer cadence than usual, perhaps because swimmers were wired and not getting set, perhaps to prevent swimmers from “anticipating starts,” as at least one team was coached to do this year. He issued the stand command several times. This seems to be what pp is referring to as “icing.”

An 8u swimmer wasn’t set, and was moving forward, so he issued the stand command. She continued forward, fell in, and dq’d. Burst into tears and was carted off by a coach.[/quote]

I’m confused by that too. From the NVSL Handbook :

“A swimmer who would otherwise be charged with a false start may be relieved of the charge if the false start was caused by the swimmer’s reaction to the “stand up” command.”

At one of our A meets, one of the visiting 8u swimmers was doing something similar (leaning forward before the start and  about to fall in). The starter gave the stand command just as he was falling in.  It seemed like it was done for the purpose of saving the kid from being DQd.  [/quote]

The false start wasn’t caused by a reaction to the stand command. It was in progress when the starter called stand.[/quote]
