As a parent of kids who are heavily into math competitions in middle and high schools, I would not recommend competitions so early. At this age, they should be more focused on learning concepts deeply. Not competing which would turn them off at some point. Not focusing on speed which would be detrimental to understanding. Speed would come naturally with practice. Nearly all the kids who are heavily into math competitions at such an early age burn out/lose interest come high school. Sad, because many of them have so much potential.
The contests tend to be 30 minutes for 5 questions. They burn out because the tests get harder.
I know several kids who started in elementary and are still going strong in high school. I also know several kids who burned out. The main difference is that the kids who burned out are the ones who did math contests to please their parents, but weren't that passionate about math. Or, they're the ones who peaked very early, and then quit when they stopped winning everything. Parents should be careful not to push too much or make too big of a deal about winning awards at this age.
