Reading this my kid is never getting into college anywhere she wants to go. She’s a B+ student at top private in DC. She loves shopping at Target. Maybe she should just get a job there and throw in the towel.
I think you are just joking but on the off-chance you are not, your daughter is likely getting a great education and will get into a bunch of schools with the right list. The good news is so many colleges are out there and she can be successful from so many different choices. I think where people get in trouble is when they have a “top college” or bust mentality.
Yes, I'm joking, but, at the same time, I don't think that she's going to love her choices. She does not have her eyes set on the Ivies, but the schools she likes, at least looking at the data, are going to be so far out of her reach. When I look at her non-academic criteria for schools (geographic preference, school setting, size of school) and then look at her grades, there aren't a lot of options on paper. She's going to need to broaden her criteria to give herself realistic choices.
I want to be positive like the posters who talk about all those schools out there. But when you're in a Big 3, in fact, the list is short. So, I hear you OP. She should identify some of those really nice schools that know these privates. Mabye like F&M, Kenyon, Gettysburg, Dickinson (my DD hated Dickinson, but likes the others) and see if she likes those. The best thing will be to talk to the counselor who can give you an idea of what is realistic and just aim for those. My 2.99 big 3 kid a few years ago was accepted to Lafayette, F&M, Pitt (which he loved!), JMU, Furman, and a couple of other safeties. Went to a massive reach for which he had a hook, but should have gone to Pitt! There are options and you just need to get her excited about what makes those interesting and worthwhile and that will still help her meet her goals in life. And I would say, just stop talking to classmates about it, but it is impossible and until it's all settled, for these kids not aiming for the top, December through April can be pretty depressing.
