They had to gerrymander the district in order for him to beat Connie Morella and even then just barely. He also had the benefit of running against weak primary opposition and a bad Republican candidate. [/quote] Not exactly true. It was a huge upset when he won his first primary against Mark Shriver. [/quote] The Senate primary pitted him against Donna Edwards and a bunch of also rans. His Republican senate opponent was endorsed by Trent Lott. The outcome was a forgone conclusion. [/quote]
