The whole notion of "self-determination" in the context of the so-called "rules-based order" (which really means that the West makes the rules AND the exceptions for their own benefit) is one big chunk of hypocrisy.  There is no logical rhyme or reason as to why "the west" applauds the breakdown of some countries and attacks it in the others.  Why was South Sudan allowed to split from its neighbor? Why were Eritrea and Ethiopia? Why is Turkey allowed to occupy North Cyprus? Why is Israel permitted to annex land at will?  There are no good answers to this and we are helpless to change it.  Mocking the notion of the "rules-based order" is the only thing left every time it comes up.   [/quote]

Of course there are answers.  They fall into one of the two categories:

1) it's all right as long as it works to our advantage, and 
2) the party doing the annexing is our friend so it's all right. [/quote]
