Every year the W schools boosters cannot wait for the USNews rankings to come out to boast about how their schools rank higher than Blair. They know they cannot compete and beat Blair on the field...but on paper, oh yeah
Gerrymandering school boundaries to ensure less than 5% FARMS will help inflate standardized test averages when the county average is closer to 40%. This doesn't really mean much but it's the premise these silly rankings are based upon. It's unfortunate the rankings don't better reflect how well a school does with its students rather than the affluence or lack thereof of its constituents.
Most of the W’s aren’t gerrymandered, there are simply a minimum of unwashed masses near by. The real gerrymandering is in the DCC where the difference of a few streets could change the entire makeup of a school. Move the lines in any direction for Churchill or Whitman and you just pick up different million dollar homes. BCC and Walter Johnson were messed with already but it was to pick up parts of Kensington and Silver to boost their Mix not to avoid it.
I guess you've never looked at the boundaries. :(
Take Whitman the nicest school in MoCo, draw the boundaries in any direction up to a mile from the existing, hell just double the current zone area in all directions. It still doesn’t touch rockville, Gaithersburg, Wheaton or Silver Spring. It has the nicest parts of DC to the south, the river to the west (with the nicest parts of NoVa there), Potomac to the north and Chevy Chases/Somerset to the east. You expand it all you do is cannibalize some of if not the nicest parts of the BCC’s and Churchills clusters. It will never have measurable FARMs
