Week 7 - 2022 VA Boys Public 6A “Unofficial” Rankings 1. Robinson (11-0) Results: Def. #9 West Potomac 17-3, Def. South County 19-4 Analysis: This team is just overwhelming its opponents and showed how wide the gap is between the best overall team and the bottom half of the top 10. Despite one of the tougher schedules overall, Robinson is averaging almost 17 goals per game while giving up only 3. The game against #5 Lake Braddock is the must-watch game of the week. Expect lots of scoring, with Robinson pulling away in the second half for the win by 4+ goals. Up this week: vs. Fairfax (4/26), at #5 Lake Braddock (4/29) 2. Battlefield (8-0) Results: Def. Osbourn Park 18-2 Analysis: Another dominant win against a helpless opponent. Two more easy games ahead means Battlefield should cruise into the season finale rematch with Patriot undefeated. It is very likely that Battlefield and Patriot will face off four times this season, and potentially five times if they both make a run in states. With a stingy defense and superb goaltending, Battlefield is giving up just four goals a game. Up this week: vs. Gainesville (4/25), vs. John Champe (4/28) 3. Patriot (5-2) Results: at Osbourn Park 20-2, Def. #7 Freedom South Riding 12-5 Analysis: Patriot had an easy win against Osbourn Park, then took care of business against a good Freedom team and cemented its spot at the top of Region 6B with Battlefield. Easy week ahead, with a more difficult three-game week to follow. Still, Patriot should coast into the final game of the season against Battlefield without another loss. Up this week: vs. Osbourn (4/25) 4. Yorktown (7-2) Results: Def. Herndon 15-2, Def. Dominion 17-5 Analysis: Yorktown and Lake Braddock both killed their weaker opponents, so there was no movement in the rankings. Both teams face their only real district tests this week, with Yorktown looking to keep its winning streak against Langley going, and Lake Braddock trying to topple the mighty #1 seed Robinson. Expect Langley to control the faceoffs and try to slow the game down, but Yorktown’s scoring and strong D should prove to be too much. Up this week: at #7 Langley (4/25), vs. McLean (4/29) 5. Lake Braddock (10-1) Results: Def. Fairfax 17-3, Def. Alexandria City 18-5 Analysis: Lake Braddock made easy work of Fairfax and Alexandria City this week and continues to push Yorktown for the #4 spot. Huge week ahead with a nice warmup game against Woodson and then a huge showdown against #1 Robinson. It would be nice to see Lake Braddock push Robinson and show that there may be some battles ahead in Districts, Regionals and States. Lake Braddock and Robinson look to have Region C locked up, as no one else in the region appears likely to challenge them. Up this week: vs. Woodson (4/26), vs. #1 Robinson (4/29) 6. Madison (9-3) Results: Def. Centreville 14-2, Def. #10 Oakton 13-1 Analysis: Madison is heating up big time and absolutely crushed Centreville and Oakton, with the offense finally firing on all cylinders. Madison has the Concorde District locked up, with no clear #2 team in that district. Region D looks like it is Yorktown and Madison’s to lose, unless Langley can surprise Yorktown next week. Madison should make easy work of South Lakes and cruise past Westfield the following week to finish the regular season 11-3. Up this week: at South Lakes (4/28) 7. Freedom South Riding (5-4) Results: Def. Independence 9-3, Lost to #3 Patriot 12-5 Analysis: Freedom had a good win against 7-1 Indy. A disappointing loss in their rematch with Patriot but the score was not as bad as their Battlefield loss. It was a close enough game with Patriot to support the idea that Freedom is still probably slightly better than the next tier of teams and Battlefield is better than Patriot. Freedom still has five more regular season games and could easily win out and finish 10-4, with losses only to Battlefield and Patriot (2x each). Up this week: at Osbourn (4/27), vs. Osbourn Park (4/28) 8. Langley (6-3) Results: Def. Washington-Liberty 9-0, Def. Herndon 8-3 Analysis: Langley continues to beat the weaker Liberty district teams, but seems to struggle to score at the rate of the higher seeds. It is tempting to move them down despite their two wins this week, but they barely hold on to the #7 spot until they get their shot to prove themselves against Yorktown. Langley’s slow, possession-based offense may keep the game close, but will likely hurt them if they fall behind against Yorktown’s higher powered offense. A blowout loss could drop Langley out of the top 10 altogether. Up this week: vs. #4 Yorktown (4/28) 9. West Potomac: (7-4) Results: Lost to #1 Robinson 17-3, Def. Fairfax 16-1 Analysis: West Potomac got absolutely destroyed by #1 Robinson, then followed up with an easy win against Fairfax. On any given night, there is almost nothing separating Langley, Oakton, West Potomac, Westfield, West Springfield, Woodson (and probable even McLean, Centreville, and Alexandria City). West Potomac beat Oakton and Westfield by one each and holds on to its spot despite the huge loss to Robinson. Games against Alexandria City and West Springfield could be interesting and help clarify the bottom half of the top 10. Up this week: vs. Alexandria City (4/26), vs. West Springfield (4/29) 10. Oakton (6-6) Results: Def. Westfield 9-8, Lost to #6 Madison 13-1 Analysis: Oakton won a close one against Westfield to keep Westfield just out of the top 10, then got pummeled by the surging Warhawks. Truly about seven teams could be in this #10 spot, including the two teams above and several of the teams below. Oakton beat Westfield and Woodson head to head and Woodson just beat West Springfield, so Oakton just barely holds on the ten spot, despite the embarrassing performance against Madison. Matchup with Centreville should be close with both teams playing a similar athletic and aggressive style. Up this week: at Centreville (4/28) Others Receiving Votes: Westfield (7-5), West Springfield (5-2), Woodson (7-4), Alexandria City (8-2), McLean (6-6), Centreville (5-5)
