Latest update re the press release and the story gets even sketchier. Basically the mayor pushed for a press release and wouldn’t wait for the Commonwealth’s attorney to finish working in court (he was trying a case all day). If the law dictates very strictly who has access to information in juvenile cases and what can be released to the public (which is the excuse the city has been using for why so little information can be made public) then how does anyone outside of the court system (hence the commonwealth’s attorney) have the necessary information to make the press release/statement? Wouldn’t only the commonwealth attorney’s office have that? And since he states in this article that his office was not involved in writing it, approved it, not reviewed it as he was in court all day, then something doesn’t smell right, at all. The statement that was released definitely did seem to call the victim a liar and that the public was overreacting. I am just so disturbed by all of this and now different departments in the city are pointing fingers at one another. The mayor should NOT have this much power. His role is just ceremonial, he goes to ribbon cuttings, has a vote on the city council, signs stuff. The person who actually manages the city, with power, is the city manager. I do believe Justin pushed for this press release, and that he has bigger goals and objectives than being mayor and wants to run for Congress in the future. A 14 year old was probably gang raped in Minnie Howard, right before a presidential and city council election, around the same time another local jurisdiction was making national headlines for its mismanagement of the sexual assaults on their campuses (Loudoun). Do I think these influenced how the Alexandria case was handled, absolutely. That poor girl. https://alextimes.com/2022/04/minnie-howard-assault-statement-criticized/
