I was expected to wear diapers to bed as I was a nightly bedwetter, often 2-3 times a night. I was allowed to stop wearing a nightime diaper when I entered high school. My quality of sleep became awful as I’d wake up to nightly floods, every night, and had to deal with soaked sheets, blankets, pillows, etc. I always lived with a plastic mattress cover. I had actually grown pretty secure about wearing diapers so put myself back in them after the nightime messes. Of course my family knew I was a diaper wearing bedwetter and most of my extended family. Whenever we visited family or friends I always had my designated plastic protected bed. I always had doctors telling me I’d outgrow it. Medications and alarms had no affect. Too bad I never had a urodynamic study done as a teen because when I finally had a urologist suggest one it was discovered I had a neurogenic bladder and as the dr. Put it my bladder reacts like an infants in that my brain and bladder don’t communicate correctly and any hope of waking up dry was totally out of my control. This also explained why I struggled a lot during the daytime also. I’ve stayed in my thick overnight diapers, and chose to use quality disposable diapers during the daytime 16 years ago. My stress level and concern about wetting my pants and having to change during the day, all but disappeared. Now I just deal with remembering when my diaper has reached its limit, and change. At night I will sometimes leak when I wet too much for my cloth overnight diaper. Other than that those minor issues are just part of the routine.
