3 years ago a group of Wilson kids untied my elderly dog from a pole outside the Whole Foods in Tenleytown. I was inside with my new baby, gone less than 5 minutes. When we came outside, we found an MPD officer and a Whole Foods employee coaxing him out of the street on friggin Wisconsin Avenue, where they’d apparently chased him into traffic on purpose. They saved him but the kids ran away laughing. He was just a dog, I know, but my personal experiences with the Wilson kids in Tenley over the years have ranged from mildly annoying to outright dangerous…and even in the best of circumstances in a school filled with honor students who play the tuba, “rapid release” especially of that many kids in that age group is so so stupid.
The cops should have written a ticket/citation to you for animal cruelty. Who ties their dog to a pole in the middle of a busy city street? Leave the poor thing home! Putting that aside, yeah, they are teenagers. They are loud and rowdy. But the neighbors in Tenley have a longstanding rep of being racist NIMBYs - the reason Wisconsin Ave looks like shit is because they fight to the death any new development or construction. If they want peace and tranquility and none of "those kids" - MOVE TO THE SUBURBS.
Seriously- obviously the kids (who may or may not have been Wilson students) shouldn't have done that but why on earth were you bringing your dog on a walk if you were going into a store? And even worse, tying her up on a busy street?
Typically DC beat up the victim behavior and excuse the psychopaths. Who would chase a dog into traffic? Jesus!!
Thanks, PP. This is the dog poster and I know what happened because the man who worked at the store and was moving carts at the time witnessed it with his own two eyeballs and alerted the officer nearby. Together, they told me when I came outside. I’m grateful to them both for springing into action. As for the pup coming along to the store - I was a new mom with no help and no friends in a newish city learning how to juggle new priorities (like keeping a another human alive). We needed milk for coffee, the dog needed some exercise and in that very isolating time especially I needed some sunshine too. To be clear - when this happened, there was a carabiner and a water bowl around the corner from the store exit on the large covered patio. You know…like for people to tie up their dogs. But how’s that relevant? Would it have been more or less excusable to herd my pet into traffic in a different setting or circumstance? When your kid sees someone’s pet tied up outside CVS or laying unrestrained on their front porch does he or she immediately think it’d be fun to see them as a pancake? The hot bar is meaningless. Who cares. A bunch of those kids are probably legit hungry. Regardless, it’s not the same as knowingly trying to seriously injur or kill an animal. To the two dear posters who expressed their concern for his well-being, the world’s most wonderful dog passed away peacefully last year at 16. ❤️
You really don’t have to defend yourself to the crazies on here. I think it is racist to have low expectations of our teenagers. I’m a teacher and I try to be encouraging and supportive but I expect a lot out of kids, no matter what their background. Because ultimately we need to prepare them for living in the real world which often is not a kind place
