Teachers unions and, in some places teachers themselves, are the biggest obstacle to children returning to school. While the fear is understandable, the unwillingness to do right by children is not.
100% virtual is far better than this idiotic two day a week concurrent model.
I long term subbed for all virtual ES kids in fall... just started long term subbing at a school where families can choose remote or hybrid. Remote kids have had five days a week with the same teacher all year. Hybrid kids were coming mon/tues or thurs/fri and are remote the opposite days and remote Wednesday’s. Now, apparently because of one PIA school board member, the hybrid kids come mon/tues or thurs/fri and every other Wednesday’s the cohorts switch who comes in person and who stays at home. They also have to livestream 2 hours per day. It’s ridiculous trying to answer questions kids (and their parents) on the computer have and the kids in person at the same time. The concurrent thing is honestly stupid and at lunch all the teachers say that concurrent is so much work and so ineffective that they can’t wait until the hybrid kids become 5 days a week in person kids. They’re thinking by April this school will be 5 days a week. I was hired to teach half of the hybrid class (I teach from the room the remote teacher would normally be in). A lot of remote kids were switching to hybrid and the rooms are tiny so they needed more staff. It’s way harder than when I long term subbed in fall for 5 days a week full remote kids. But I do enjoy being in person better... but I want it to be 5 days a week. It’s a pain making sure all the hybrid kids have what they’ll need for their virtual days and we’ve had kids typing inappropriate things in the Meet chat during live streamed lessons and the teachers eyes aren’t on the chat then. Some glitch makes us unable to disable the chat sometimes. Concurrent is the most stupid model from what I’ve been experience
