Facebook post from an ICU nurse in Tucson https://www.facebook.com/ben.gerkin.3/posts/10163822161685444 I have been a Registered Nurse for about 10 years and I have spent around 55 of my last 100 hours physically working on a COVID ICU and have some observations: -This second surge in AZ has hit far worse then the first. We have been balancing around full capacity at all times over the past weeks. -COVID is real. Despite an insane amount of people on social media believing the hoax or that it’s just the flu and people shouldn’t worry. -I have never looked around my 100% full ICU and genuinely thought that there is the possibility of NO survivors. -When you get legitimately sick and require intubation (breathing machine). There is a very slim chance of survival. -This virus hits quick. Patients have been going from barely needing to be hospitalized for shortness of breath and not requiring oxygen, to intubation and maxed out ventilator settings within hours. -Nearly all of these patients are requiring not only pain medication and sedation, but also medication for us to completely paralyze them so we can control every aspect of their breathing. Even with all these measures and high ventilator settings the blood gases have been some of the worst I have ever seen. -Just because our Governor has opened up our state and is not requiring masks and social distancing doesn’t mean the pandemic is over. Like I said previously, this wave is WORSE than before and will keep getting worse if we let it. -Hospitals are nearing the phase were ICU nurses and going to have to increase ratios and take care of more patients then we typically do. Just to manage the influx of extremely sick patients, who once intubated are usually hospitalized for around a month or so before passing away. -Hospitals are at the point where we can’t accept all patients and are making decisions based on if they have the chance of survival. We are also not able to provide all treatment modalities such as dialysis on all patients based on futility of the situation. -This is real. Take it seriously and think about your actions before you go out shopping/to restaurants/parties, etc before you are the one who unknowingly transmits this virus to your Mom/Dad/Grandma/Grandpa/Brother/Sister. The majority of our patients aren’t over the age of 65. We have had patients in their 40s. Pregnant patients. Family members dying side by side. These patients aren’t old and don’t have extremely long lists of comorbid conditions.Rant over. Be safe. Update #1: Hello everyone. Just your local Arizona crisis actor. All those years at crisis actor university are finally paying off. Fear mongering 101 is really hitting the sweet spot these days. My mom always told me I should choose a different career. Maybe one like hers and become a nurse to try and help people, but instead I went the opposite direction to spread misinformation and fear. These are the times I guess. *now on a serious note* -To all the people who have posted about them or their families being personally affected. I hope things turn around and get better and hope you know that as a medical professional we are trying everything in our power to help as many as possible. We have learned so much from cases all over the world these past few months and these treatment modalities are more effective than previous. -I know there is always a level of skepticism when news like this comes to our attention. I am not speaking on every city/state/hospital/unit. My first post was my haggard mind after 4 straight shifts on my covid unit. But the numbers here are definitely getting worse than before here in AZ. Check every news outlet...Many people have stated that we are still in the first wave and I agree. A better word would have been second surge. -As before not all these cases are life threatening. I personally know people who have tested positive and had no symptoms or minimal symptoms not requiring hospitalization, but again that is not the case everyone. If that was you or your loved one consider yourselves lucky. You might have survived, but without proper masking and distancing as per cdc you could still transmit the virus to someone who may not be so lucky. -To the people saying it’s wrong treatment putting patients on a ventilator. The patients we are doing this for are about to die from respiratory failure and if we didn’t provide this measure they wouldn’t survive more then a few minutes to hours. We are giving people their only shot at survival by doing this. Similar to doing CPR on someone. CPR only works around 7% of the time, but at least we are giving them a chance. -Finally to all the people wanting video proof🤔 hospitals really frown upon violating HIPPA and patient privacy. I wish I could take you on a tour through most ICU units around the nation so you good take a glimpse of our new daily “normal” at work. Hope everyone has a blessed day. Stay safe out there.
Hmm, large academic medical center in dmv where my spouse works had over 65 percent survival rate for covid patients on vents. Does this lady work at a hospital with incompetent staff?
1. The nurse who posted this is a man. 2. I don't see where he gives a ventilator survival rate for his hospital. 3. The vent survival rate varies. The head of the VHC ED says theirs is <50%. https://www.facebook.com/masilverman/posts/10223216382468484 Any other stupid rude stuff you care to say?
C’mon, you post something filled with exaggeration, and then you call others stupid? Covid is bad, but it isn’t Ebola. Most people, even those hospitalized, even those in the icu survive, as long as they don’t enter hospital with dni and dnr orders. It should be taken seriously but people need to stop with this type of pandemic porn.
