I wonder if German people feel a never ending guilt debt for their heritage because their ancestors killed millions of Jews. History is violent, brutal, and ugly. If you feel guilty for the past for things that happened when you weren't even born you'll feel bad for the rest of your life.
actually yes- they do. Denying the evils of nazism are actually a crime. they have tons of hate speech laws, still prosecute old nazis and talk about it all the time and how this is a debt that they owe humanity and europe. they also talk about how they killed handicapped children, biracial germans, jehovas witnesses, roma , gay people, communists,, etc etc.. They guard against doing anything that horrible again and actually totally changed the way they educated there childrena nd ran their society b/c of guilt over their nazi past. . .This is one of the reasons Angela Merkel gave for her openhearted response to the migrant crisis and by the way- she was suuuuuper conservative and suffered a childhood in the GDR. Same with the Japanese- they give massive amounts of charity and talk about the crimes they committed- i know many chinese and koreans think they don't do enough but Germans definitely routinely write popular fiction and and film movies about their guilt over their nazi past. Its one of the hallmarks of a functioning civilization- they indict themselves for their mistakes and try to build a better society. Its an actual hallmark of (western) liberal democratic civilization - you talk about how far you've come honestly and openly, you take stock of where you are and then you put together a plan for who you want to be in the future. Its quite healthy- and its an attitude that has served individuals and nations well.
