I'm in a profession that is adjacent to LE and I spend a lot of time with cops. Some of that has been off the clock, drinking, getting real. They absolutely have a view of the world that some people are good and others are "garbage" (actual word they use). I told one of them that I sympathize with BLM and friends with some members, and he said that BLM is an anti-cop organization. I didn't understand that POV but he said rhat BLM encourages a cop vs black people mentality. One thing I do empathize with is that we have systemic racism in America so we can't expect cops to somehow be enlightened. When they feel in danger, their brain goes to primal instincts and that includes tribalism. I thought that was the most self aware thing he said. It's also very difficult to fix. It's one thing to identify the problem but how do we fix it? Whatever the fix is, it goes way beyond just cops.
Doctors are subject to the same ingrained racism. Studies show it's rampant. The impact is much broader than acute instances that result in someone's death. But at least no one suggests that a doctor should be immune from a malpractice suit if a patient dies due to a mistake based on a doctor's internal biases. How about let's start by holding police officers accountable when they kill people as the result of unnecessary brutality and/or ignorance?
