I think that radio show played a part, especially because (from my research) Aaron and Jonathan's dad was very homophobic (and machismo), and the boys very much wanted to please their abusive father.  I am not saying that the radio show had any right to air that, but I am saying I think it played a part.  On the Netflix special, there is another (former?) NFL player who has since come out, and he said no way would he have come out during that time.

Also, during the prison phone calls, it seems Aaron is very conflicted with his sexuality, as he is saying derogatory things about some of the other inmates (he believed to be gay).  So yeah, if (for example) Aaron was outed (during the trial) or found to have killed Odin Lloyd because Odin knew about Aaron's sexuality (since confirmed by his brother) - that would have been Aaron's worst nightmare, presumably.
