This is because they accepted you as one of them. As for other pp's pointing out African Americans and diaspora Africans in the U.S. they are right. There is a vast difference between their experiences. Imagine being kicked every time you try to get up? For 400 years? That mind set, that poverty is insane. My racist FIL works with African immigrants and likes their "attitude." Yes, he is racist and a Democrat that dislikes Trump. But, thinks and talks alike Trump. I am from Yugoslavia originally and as time passed by he feels comfortable to tell me that my people are butchers, that "we" meaning former Yugoslavs are but like Turks to Americans. Not sure what Turks did to him, but he clearly thinks them not white and primitive. I don't know if it is the political scene or if it is him getting older and saying all the crap he thinks out loud.
African immigrants ARE strivers and doers. They don’t have the same chip on their shoulder as many American A-As. In fact, I’ve heard immigrants criticize the latter’s carping and attitude.
There is selection bias here. Immigrating to the US legally is extraordinarily difficult and expensive. African immigrants come from relative wealth. They also have education. More than American-born citizens. This country has denied both to descendants of enslaved people forever. You may perceive African immigrants as strivers and doers. Because they had the fortitude and means to move to an entirely different culture. That’s the selection bias. Just like with Asians. We lump them all together and think they are hard working and smart. But that generally reflects educated families from China and Korea who had the means to immigrate. Others, with refugee status like Vietnamese and Cambodians, have low education rates and high poverty rates.
