Well, I didn't read the whole thread, so sorry if I've missed key details, but I would be against reshirting, unless you start and determine your kid is not ready for his current class. I myself was redshirted because I was on the cusp, age-wise, and all my friends from the mixed PreK were in the lower-aged class, so it made sense (at least that was what I was told haha, but I guess that is a sign I was maturity-wise better with the younger kids). There are a lot of benefits to being among the older kids in your grade. BUT a January kid is already going to be one of the older kids, without redshirting. My January kid is I think the second oldest in his class. Yes, there are benefits to being one of the older kids, but you don't want your kid to be so much older he doesn't have peers in his class. I've seen this play out--with kids who were held back for sports, or who went and played sports for a few years then went to school and were older than their classmates--and the older kids seem to feel a bit isolated, and don't mix in as well. (All this is premised, btw, on the DC cut off date in Sept. 30, if you are in a different school district, and redshirting your kid would put them only a year older than his classmates, then disregard!) In any event, you know your kid best. Talk with the school, his teachers, etc., and good luck!
