The Brits would have treated her with kid gloves, had she remained in the country. The family pays a fine, she spends at most a week or two in a minimum security facility, the US/UK governments pay off the family of the kid who was killed.

The media would have been quiet on the story, it would have blown over with any fuss Stateside.
