people threw over fenty for gray, then gray for bowser. both are far superior to bowser. gray had been a head of at least one agency. being mayor is not the same as being on the council. she lacks the chops to be an executive. i voted twice for fenty and voted for gray when challenged by bowser. after the llc scandal, bowser proposed the most inconsequential reforms to close the loophole. the minute i heard about the homeless shelter proposal, I knew it was a boondoggle. the citizens pay developers for a building, which were inappropriate for families in the shelter system - one bath tub per floor. we then lease back the building - which we paid for! - from developers on a short-term lease. in nearly every instance, the buildings were being constructed on land that was not zoned for such dwellings. the moment those leases were up, the developers would have been able to construct buildings not in line with the original zoning. total bs. if she had not been greedy and had focused on affordable housing rather than lining her pockets, she may have actually done something for the people.
And don't forget that closing DC General has never really been about closing a substandard facility. It's been about making a prime site available for development, and the mayor knows that favored developers covet the opportunity,
I have called 311 twice in the past week over people shouting aggressively at passersby on the street (I just think if someone had intervened before the Logan circle jogger stabbing). So many of these people are in need of dedicated medical care. The DC General should have been repurposed for that, and our laws amended as needed to involuntarily hold people demonstrating seriously anti social and self pr outward threatening behavior. Please dont give $ to homeless on the street and please call 311 when they demonstrate bizarre, aggressive behaviors. They are unwell and you are doing them (and everyone) a favor.
