Phil Schoen - "Maybe he'll be fantastic and I wish him the best, but I still can't see how a year long, worldwide search, came up with an average coach, of an average team, in an average league as the best choice for the top job in the nation."
Politics and Nepotism that are so blatant it is ludicrous. That is US soccer and always has been.
Yep. Read this...it's disgusting how they didn't even interview anyone else--or even him: https://www.si.com/soccer/2018/12/02/gregg-berhalter-usmnt-manager-us-soccer-earnie-stewart-jay
Even Grant Wahl does not like it, even though he seems to try to argue in the end that some unidentified soccer people think that Berhalter is a good hire despite the flawed process. On the other hand, Alexi Lalas, who is normally a big US soccer establishment apologist, said "If the same process to hire Gregg Berhalter had been used to hire Julen Lopetegui or Tata Martino, most wouldn't give a damn about the process." I happen to think they managed to screw up both the process and the choice.
I love Tyler Twellman’s quote in the other article a pp posted. Come on, it’s basically criminal the way they handled this. How does USSF get away with what it does? I think because the parents don’t follow this stuff. They only focus on their kid’s team. There should be a public uprising. And, that former US NationL Spanish coach with multiple titles we didn’t even bother to talk to when he expressed interest? Instead we took a loser that got fired from 2nd division, never won a title and has a losing record. Bravo.
They should pay attention. People are talking about DA dropping U12. Who do you think made that decision? The same corrupt crowd that hired Berhalter at USSF. Why do you think they don't do anything to curb "pay to play?" Because USSF has become a nonprofit support system for MLS profits. MLS wants you to pay for your kid's development so they can take him at no cost and pay him $30k a year, or some other miserable salary cap number while they throw millions at washed-up Euro players to fill seats and sell jerseys. And USSF just wags its tail and says "Yes, sir."
