When I started my career, I was a low level employee in what would be considered a mail room type of job.  I took what I could get and was planning on working my way through school.  One of the people above me was always nice to me and would talk to me on a regular basis so I would stop by her office for a little chat when I had the time.  One day I told her I found out about some available promotions that were coming up and I was going to see if I could put in for them.  They would really help me out.  Her reply to me was, "Why would you do that?  The more you make the more you spend.  You'll be no better off than you are now except your job will be harder and more stressful."  My reply to her was along the lines of, "You have a new car and own a house.  I have a used car that needs new brakes and rent a one bedroom apartment."  She followed up with, "Well you're happy where you're at, you don't need more responsibility.  Don't put in for those jobs.  They aren't for you."

I did put in for the promotion and I got it.  A few years later she was fired for unethical behavior and a coworker told me she was seen working at a gas station.[/quote]
