He was adopted by his mom’s third husband when he was three.  So his mom changed his name to his step father’s. But sounds like primary home was super dysfunctional- he was in and out of foster care and lived with grandparents often and was primarily raised by them. It doesn’t sound like his stepfather was involved at all, at least not in a positive way. He likely saw his grandfather as the father figure in his life and changed his name as an adult to reflect that. This is my speculation based on Wikipedia.  [/quote]
