I feel bad about illegal people being deported but at the same time they didn't follow the rules. Mixed feelings about it.
The “rules” are archaic. Both parties have agreed at various points that some sort of reform is needed, but certain wealthy politicians continuously upend attempts to fix things because the reality is they don’t simply want immigrants to “follow the rules.” They actually don’t want them to be here at all. Not to mention many people who have been trying to follow “the rules” are being deported anyway. We have asylum seekers who filled out their info. having the rug pulled out from under them. People appearing for appointments with immigration officials trying to get paperwork sorted being nabbed. When I was younger and less educated and lived in a red state bubble I had a lot of similar sentiment about how if you want to come to the U.S. then you should follow the law. But now that I’m older and have gone to law school and have met people from various backgrounds, I’ve realized how incredibly rigged the system is. It’s not like most immigrants *want* to be undocumented. I’m also appalled meanwhile that when our president, one of the richest and most powerful men in the world, violates due process the republicans try to write it off as an oopsie paperwork issue. But God forbid some poor immigrant fail to follow a complex, outdated system to perfection, then their punishment is banishment possibly to a prison in some country they’ve never been to that violates human rights. I keep waiting for the entirety of our country to wake up to the fact that our systems are built to benefit the wealthy and privileged. The angry rhetoric about immigrants “taking from the taxpayer” is to distract from the real scams being pulled by the rich and powerful. Also have you ever noticed we’re told we shouldn’t be helping immigrants because we need to “help our own.” But then despite all these deportations, we are not helping our own. If anything we’re cutting veterans benefits and making safety nets like SS, SNAP, etc. harder to access. But Drumpf and co are hoping if they scare everyone enough about brown people from other countries, we won’t fight back against the ruling class.
I agree with everything you said (except that I didn't become a lawyer, I just grew up and met people outside of my bubble).
