If older relatives are looking for a good gift, Lego does a collectible holiday village type series where they come up with a new design each year. The prices are reasonable (under $100) and they are very cute.

We started getting them the first year, and spend Thanksgiving weekend with our kids putting them together to display. They go away after the holidays with the other decorations.

This year's set is a Christmas train.

Perhaps you could suggest this set to one of the grandparents.  It is a collectible that your son could put up every year (maybe plan for grandpa or grandma to help him build it at Thanksgiving each year) and when you put it away the set fits easily in a gallon zip lock baggie, then get tucked away in a bin with other Christmas decorations.

My kids are teens now and still look forward to getting the annual set and the tradition of putting together their lego village. I imagine future grandkids will as well.[/quote]
