Also, some people leave at intermission.  THe first half is the part that's focused on the story -- e.g., the Xmas party, the Rat King battle, etc.  The second half is more abstract (e.g. each type of candy gets its own dance) so can be harder for the kids to follow.  That said, I like the second half much better -- the dancing is phenomenal and the music is too. (The Russian dancers and Mother Ginger are two of my personal favorites.)  Be warned that the last half an hour drags a LOT though -- the flowers and the sugar plum fairy is the most boring part of the ballet.

If you don't really think the kids will be into the dance and show, and just want the holiday spirit, consider the Nutcracker Tea at the Ritz.  It's cute, but it's expensive and the dancing is pretty blah, since it's a couple people on a wooden floor put into a big room in the Ritz (like what they probably put out for wedding receptions).
