You give Trump too much credit.  He didn't damage the nation.  The fucking country was already damaged. He gave a voice to angry people. They were angry before, and they are angry now.  point is - He let them speak.

The businesses and 1% who sent your jobs overseas to further gild their own nests and gave not a crap thought to the middle and working class; the Republicans who convinced you that you, too would be a billionaire one day and tax cuts for the obscenely wealthy are a great idea! even if your kids' schools circled the toilet; the talking heads who whipped you into a frenzy over such things as a non-existent "War on Christmas" and attacks on the Christian faith (no one has interfered with your ability to worship). You've been conned.
