We are in Springfield, VA. I'm assuming the closest club for us is SYC. My DS (2005) wants to play soccer. We missed signup for Fall. I see games schedule for U12 are among other SYC teams but for older players there's a link to SFL with several SYC teams. Do the SYC teams play other clubs or mainly SYC in the SFL? Are the SYC teams formed by skill level or random at U12 and older? thanks
In theory, SFL teams are supposed to be formed randomly, or at least not by skill level. I don't think a lot of clubs adhere to that, but I can't speak to SYC. But the bottom line is there shouldn't be any harm in signing up in the spring. Whether he has a good experience will depend on so many factors, including the coach. Chances are pretty good he'll have a pretty good time. If for some reason he likes the soccer aspect but not anything else about the experience, you could always try a different club (or at least ask to be assigned to a different SYC team) next fall. And you might be able to find a fun training program or low-key indoor league in the winter. Just be aware that a lot of the leagues you'll see at the nearby Fairfax Sportsplex and elsewhere are full of either travel teams or really intense rec players, so the level will be pretty high.
