Just go to the Caribbean. Puerto Rico is great and I was just there with our five year old. Look, Zika is everywhere, even in the southern part of the US. Unless you are pregnant, planning to be pregnant,or want to get someone pregnant, then don't go anywhere where there are lots of mosquitos or Zika. If not, go for it. Even if you do get the virus (we are sure our kid did), it's mild. No major fever or aches or anything. Most people who have it don't even know they have it, it's so mild. So they walk around normally not suspecting anything. If you are the rare few that reacts to it, you get a rash, red eyes, low fever for three days and thence it's gone. Take acetaminophen. That's all you can do. Not like Dengue or Chikunguya virus. Those are miserable. I've had them all.
. +1 We were in San Juan in early August. 0 mosquito bites. So much to do. I felt foolish with the amount of mosquito protection I brought even though our AidBNB host said it was not necessary.
I'm sure the host would also tell you that crime isn't an issue as well. Except it is. And there have been many many Zika cases in PR. They are still studying Zika and don't entirely understand the long term effects or lack thereof. There are plenty of places to travel and no reason to put yourself at risk for Zika in PR.
