FYI, the forum is mostly ruins with very little shade, so esp. with small children I would consider either skipping it or covering it very quickly--my guess is you don't want to be on a long tour of it. Also there are some tickets that cover multiple attractions, which may allow you to skip the ticket line once you buy it, but you should check for the latest on that.

Note that the Colisseum and maybe other attractions have instituted strict bag limits, so you can't enter with a backpack or maybe even a purse.  On the bright side there are public fountains with drinkable water all over the place (there's even one by the Colisseum with carbonated water).

We tried to have gelato or other snack stops woven into the itinerary (there's a famous gelato place around the corner from the Trevi fountain, for example).
