If the assistant were doing a chunk of the work, i'd divide the 20% tip between them, rounding up to even numbers, with more going to the stylist.  If the assistant is just doing regular assistant stuff (like washing, etc) i'd give 20% to the stylist and $5 to the assistant. Though frankly all of this starts getting ridiculous with the absurd amount we're paying for styling in this era.  I mean, my salon is pretty consistently busy even during the weekday - so the assistant/floor sweeper may do a few hair washes per hour. Tip alone she'd be making another $20 per hour above her wages at these generous rates - which seems like a pretty high wage for that role. I'm guessing they don't actually make anywhere near that, and most people pay more like $2 or $3 to the assistant.  [/quote]

Unfortunately, where I have been living up till recently (now DC), this is the normal expectation and anything less is considered an insult - you'd definitely have a problem getting a future appointment. [/quote]
