Allen West is an African American former military leader (resigned instead of being thrown out) who became a tea party leader. I pointed out that my FB friends who link to his nonsense are white and not affiliated with the military (or the tea party as far as I can tell) to provide context to my question: what's his appeal (to these folks)?
