I would want to talk to her about how she feels about being on a team whose main purpose is to cheer and support others, usually boys. I would try to steer her toward gymnastics or acrobatics. But I would not forbid it.
I was a cheerleader, and we cheered for both the boys and girls teams (well, basketball, because there was no girls' football team). Also, I looked at cheerleading as a sport -- we went to Nationals. To the OP: I also has some hesitation when my daughter expressed interest in cheerleading, but I decided to let her follow whatever path she wanted to, with my guidance along the way. She has not yet decided whether cheerleading is her thing (she has tried cheerleading and gymnastics), but really, it's going to come down to what she's interested in. I'm not sure why you think cheerleading is trashy. Explain?
