Ugh! South of the Border is so scary, like some horror movie with zombie clowns!!! It looks like a good place to dump a body. Don't stop there unless you want to buy fireworks. We usually spend the night in Florence because no matter how late of a start you get it's doable for a night drive from DC. This year we did not book a room on I-95 ahead on a Saturday night during spring break and that was a huge mistake, every room from Florence to Savannah was booked with spring break traffic and a music festival, we ended up at a motel in Hinesville (Fort Stewart) 15 minutes off the interstate. Florence has an Outback, a mall etc. Many of the towns along I-95 are watering holes off the pike with Cracker Barrels and chain motels and gas, and not much else. The Hampton Inns or Baymont Inns looked OK. Ambrias Garden Manor Bed and Breakfast looks nice. We stayed at a Red Roof once with DH before we were married to save money, ugh, never again.
Wherever you stop BOOK IN ADVANCE. We didn't two years ago and ended up with the very last room in Fort Bragg 20 minutes off the interstate. The only reason we snagged it was thru Hotels.com....20 minutes later when we arrived at the hotel they were turning people away.
