My son has been playing on a guitar for almost two years. His instructor suggested supplementing the lesson with something for gifted little guitar players. Any suggestions for a 7 year old who loves music?
Here is what serious musicians need, gifted or no: 1. A demanding yet caring music teacher that makes students perform regularly. Sometimes a large music school is better for this. I don't like competitions, though. Just recitals. 2. Music theory classes. European students start this at an early age, less so in this country, probably because many children find it dry. But it is essential to understanding music. 3. Taking him to live concerts frequently. 4. Have him join a band - difficult to find at his age, I know. If he switches instruments, he can play in an orchestra - there's nothing like it to motivate a player! And unless your child is in difficulties because of his giftedness, it's not generally helpful to mention it. There are plenty of serious musicians in the area. My kid started the violin at 3, and she's not the only one.
