Not sure how people get their middle schoolers to school so early. My kids aren't even home from activities some nights until after 8 or later. It's a great night if my 12 year old has lights out at 9:30. My high schooler is around 10:45.
My kids don't have that many activities. DS plays one rec sport per season. Soccer times are reasonable but yes, he goes to bed later during baseball season because games run quite late but that's an exception to the routine. He's it the school band, which has no evening requirements except occasional concerts. He participates in church youth group which meets one evening a week but he's home by 8:30. DD has a similar schedule with one sport that has 1 weeknight practice (home by 8:30), school band, an art class on the weekend. They both have time to do homework before they go to any evening activity. Sufficient sleep is important to us so if they wanted to do something that meant they would frequently be out until 9pm+ for the long term we'd probably say no.
