This year we chose an after school care teacher whose mother died this past year.  We know where she lives so we dropped off a small bag with a few carefully chosen items.  $10 Panera gift card (her favorite place), some oranges (she has told us she inherited her moms orange juice press) and a frame and a small devotional book about remembering loved ones.   I think they also like the idea of doing something "secretly".
