Leaves are a great source of natural compost and just good stuff for the soil. Why give it away?
Most of the leaves in our yard blow in from other people's yards. I mow the few leaves that end up on the lawn, but we have tons of leaves in the driveway and in beds. It's much easier to rake/blow those down to the street than to rake/blow them onto the grass and mow the grass again.
You lose the benefits when you let someone else take them away. I don't understand people who have all their leaves hauled away in the fall and then buy bags and bags of compost in the spring. They could have had a lot of compost for free by simply mowing over their leaves in the fall.
We mow our leaves in as much as possible. But when it's all oak and a lot of them (6 trees!) and they all fall down at the same time that's too much acid for the ground to take all at once.
You can always add a little lime to your soil. Also, so much of our soil around here is so clay-ey, that the acid in the oak leaves won't hurt it. Organic matter is just good for the soil. When our leaves are really thick, we use the mower bagger to pick them up and then dump them in a compost pile. They compost more quickly because of being broken up by the mulching mower blades.
