Guideline is 10 minutes per grade level for non-advanced courses in most schools I'm familiar with. Admittedly that's only a small number, but still. Perfectly appropriate, certainly not excessive. A few hours a night for a single class would be excessive, but my middle schoolers were both told to expect up to 3 hours of nightly homework total (all classes combined). They rarely had that much, but they certainly had a few minutes per class on many occasions. They were assigned more homework than they ever did at home... they made excellent use of bus time and of dead time before/after school or in other classes. [/quote]
