This occurred today. Does it sound similar to what happened in Rockville? The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of an incident that occurred in the neighborhood around Wilson Wims Elementary School this morning. At approximately 8:55am, the principal at Wilson Wims Elementary School was notified by a community member of an incident that took place at the Snowden Farm Parkway and Sycamore Farm Drive school bus stop (Wims Grey Bus 2621). While two students were waiting for the bus, they stated that they were approached by a White/Asian woman driving a white minivan. She told these two students to “get in the van”. At that point, the two students ran back to adults and reported what happened. Once the school was notified of this incident, the police were immediately called and sent an officer to the school within minutes to investigate. The officer met with the students and listened to their report of what occurred this morning. The officer shared the information provided by the students with his department. A police presence will be near Wilson Wims Elementary School this afternoon and tomorrow. We have also notified Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Department of Safety and Security as well as MCPS Department of Transportation. The principal of Wilson Wims Elementary School commended these students for their actions this morning. Always remind your child to report incidents that make them uncomfortable to adults right away. In addition, this is an excellent time to review safety practices at home. We are also asking that you please remind your child of the following: • Stay with a group. Always walk with at least one friend. • If a stranger offers you a ride, say “NO!” and stay far away from the car. • If a stranger follows you on foot, get away from him or her as quickly as you can. You can run and yell loudly, “HELP!” • If a stranger follows you in a car, turn around and go the other direction. • Never leave school with a stranger. • Tell a trusted adult if a stranger is hanging around the school, playground, bus stop, or route to school. • Leave items and clothing that display your name at home so a stranger cannot read it and use your name to talk with you. Thank you for your cooperation and support. Please contact me if you have any questions.
