Because it is annoying to 1) order a size 6 pencil skirt online only to discover that it is closer to a 10  and 2) when shopping in the store, take multiple sizes of the same item. Either way, it is inefficient. [/quote]

Sizes just fit larger now, it's a trend that's been occurring since the 50's.  Every few years, you have to reevaluate your size vs. industry standard sizing and adjust your default size accordingly.  Higher volume retailers (as noted, Gap, J Crew, Ann Taylor, along with all the others like Target and Old Navy) just run larger these days than they did a decade ago.

When ordering online, pay attention to the measurements that are made available to determine sizing and know your own measurements.  That's a far more accurate way to shop than using a fairly arbitrary, unstandardized number.[/quote]
