How do you know her windows weren't locked.

I completely agree with the second poster that we should not blame the victim, but sometimes it is helpful to know details so that we don't repeat them. Like, I talked to a woman who left the window to her fourth floor fire escape open and someone broke in. I personally would never have done that, but others may have.[/quote]

don't be stupid.  If your life depends on it and the fire is licking at your heels, you break the window (either with an object sitting nearby, or your own fist protected in your shirt that you balled up around your fist.  which you always have with you.)
