This year, DD finishes middle school and moves on to high school. A lot of her close friends are going to other high schools. So we're going to take one of those friends out to lunch and a movie after school on the last day -- they dismiss school early, too, so there's lots of time for a nice outing. I'd say, if your child has a friend who is going to another school (or if your child is younger, a friend who will be away a lot of the summer, for instance) offer to take your child and that friend to do something the afternoon that school is dismissed.
