We have some herbs growing on our rooftop that are doing fantastic but our basil keeps dying. We have two different kinds and they both are doing horrible. It's very sunny all day up there and we make sure to water every other day sometimes every day. What are we doing wrong?
I had a lot of trouble growing basil on my roof. There was no shade and I think it just needs a break at some point. Everything else-Thyme, rosemary, lavender, oregano-all did wonderfully but the basil just couldn't cut it. If there's a place where it can get afternoon sun but not morning, that might help. I also found most basil to be really picky about water-couldn't take too much but always needed some so I struggled to find just the right amount. Now I have some on my patio in a container and it's totally happy but it gets only afternoon sun. I've cut it back twice. Good luck.
Thanks so much! I get sun pretty much all day on the roof. I will try moving it to my balcony but I think that might still be too much sun. I might just need to stick with the thyme and rosemary.
