I have not taken a childbirth class and was hoping this thread would have some useful info for me. Let me tell you what I've learned. I am going to deliver with whc midwives and have hired a doula. I'm hoping for a mostly unmediated birth with as few interventions as possible, but want to use nitrous oxide. These things have affected what I am looking for in a child birth class. Bradley classes are over many weeks and are geared towards women who are 100% sure they want a 100% in medicated birth. They include some coaching on how to fight the medical establishment, which I don't feel like I need. Also my midwife told me in no uncertain terms not to follow their diet because it will make a giant baby. It's too bad Bradley's not going to work for me, by these things are everywhere. My friend took a hypnobirthing class and think site as the best thing in the world. Midwife also said she hears people giving it good reviews. Trouble with this is there are zero classes I could find in the District of Columbia and none that are Metro accessible, so hypnobirthing won't work for us, either. The Breastfeeding center has some classes, but these are mostly a t times that conflict with our work schedules. Our doulas offer a one day class, as do lots of other people, but i really feel like I need more time to process information and won't get much out of a class like that. For the same reason, I'm not interested in doing the class offered by the hospital. If I do, it will be in addition to another class. I'd be open to a mixed method class, but haven't found any of those, either. Mom ease has classes geared toward people who want an epidural and a different class for people who do not. They have classes all over, but haven't gotten back to me about whether the ones at gwuh are only for people who plan to deliver there. That leaves us with Lamaze dc. I think we're going to do a four week childbirth class with them and then maybe do some other classes, too, if we like them. Midwife didn't give the same endorsement to Lamaze as she did to hypnobirthing, but she seemed to think it was better than the hospital class or Bradley.
