Well, this appalling bit of vengeful hatred exists now: https://m.facebook.com/The.Official.Marcus.Luttrell.Fanpage/posts/10152805906558406?__tn__=%2As Apparently Kyle's military colleagues think prison rape is a funny subject. How charming. Sadly I guess I understand a bit better now how atrocities like Abu Ghraib happened and why suicide and family homicide amongst returning vets is so high. While I can appreciate how traumatic service in the Middle East has been for the past decade plus, I find this kind of thinking frightening and decidedly not heroic. Not to mention ironic...this mob can't see how their zeal for vengeance mirrors whatever inner darkness led Routh to do what he did. Violence begets violence, I guess - and the VA will carry on ignoring the desperately huge need for mental health services.
I agree but it's not just military folks who believe in that kind of vigilante justice. Look at old threads on DCUM; you'll see lots of people who hope that so-and-so gets raped or "what he deserves."
I know that it's not just military members, but I believe in holding them to a higher standard, particularly if they expect to be practically worshipped by the public as demigods. This kind of appalling sentiment is why so many of just cannot muster that level of respect. I respect your courage and sacrifice, but you are mortal men and women, prone to the same ugliness and prejudices as everyone else. You are not some superhuman to be glorified as infallible and impervious to criticism. The author of this FB post is a lauded Navy SEAL, and IMO he has lost all credibility to claim some special level of respect. I get that his friend died, but this is beyond the pale.
