OP here.  I was thinking a suit would be best because she needs to dress up and won't wear a dress or anything really girly. She hates things like leggings, tights, skirts, dresses, and although I could probably force her to wear something more traditional, I don't really see the point.  If I can find something she likes, that isn't too expensive, and that won't attract negative attention, I don't see why she needs to wear a dress.  An 8 year old boy might get away with khakis and a buttondown, but I don't think that is dressy enough for a girl.[/quote]

Is it a black tie event or a formal wedding?

If it is a black tie - an 8 year old boy would not get away with khakis and a buttondown.  If it is a formal event - he should wear a jacket and tie.
