The MITRE Corporation. They used to be a standard on the Best Places to Work lists, but have been doing some reorganizing and adjustments and haven't been on for a couple of years. But well known for work life balance.
MITRE is pretty selective though, isn't it? I got callbacks and interviews from major companies like Booz and Deloitte, but never from MITRE.
MITRE is pretty weird, and can be very specific. Hiring really slowed down 2012-13, but seems to be picking back up. I would say knowing someone there may be more helpful than at a traditional consulting firm. Having some idea/experience of the role of an FFRDC (a specialized non profit category of organization) is probably a good idea.
Is it true that the pay is below market?
I work in a very small, very specialized part of MITRE and am fairly isolated from the larger corporation, so I can't say overall. My best answer would be the pay could be roughly market rate, but there is no real bonus structure or way to move up quickly. It has more of an academic/government/non profit mindset than a commercial consulting firm (because as an FFRDC MITRE is not a commercial consulting firm).
