If there's a housewarming party, I usually get some sort of nice serving dish or bowl and then put something in that could be shared or saved for the hostess. For example, I'll get a serving dish and make a batch of cookies or brownies. Or a bowl and make a fruit salad. Then the hostess can choose to put it out for the party or stash it away for later. The last party I went to, the host had some houseguests for the weekend, so I got a dish and made cinnamon rolls. He saved it for breakfast the next morning and it was well appreciated.
I forgot to add that with a BBB coupon or other coupon, I usually spend about $20 for the dish. I usually don't have to spend a lot on the food to fill the dish/bowl (I always have the ingredients for a batch of cookies or brownies or just have to buy a little for some other contribution).
