Also for anyone thinking about applying for SSI at age 18, it is also best to spend-down or transfer legally any assets in the child's name before age 13 as one might do for an elderly relative to be able to qualify for the associated Medicaid Health Insurance "eligibility."  I note this as one must be able to have the Medicaid eligibility established to qualify to accept a Waiver slot when offered, and the time frame to do so is 30 - 60 days (not sure exactly) and may not be time to get Medicaid set up in that period if say financial issues.
